Madison County Public Schools

Superintendent's Welcome

Welcome to the Madison County Schools Website. We have many exciting things happening in our schools and we would like to share these with you via this website. Our school system has 2600 students. We have one high school, one middle school, and four elementary schools, along with several pre-school programs that prepare our students for kindergarten. Madison County is a rural county with natural mountain beauty. We are very close to Asheville and border three Tennessee counties. Madison County is a great place to live and a great place for children to grow up.

The Madison County Board of Education is a very progressive board. They provide the leadership, encouragement and funding to help us accomplish our collaboratively developed vision that is harbored in our strategic plan. Board members are Sandra Tolley, chairman, Lori Massey, vice chairman, Lee Hoffman, J. C. Wallin, and Craig Goforth. Our Board leads by example, attending professional development sessions and encouraging the use of technology as demonstrated by their use of laptop computers at board meetings.

We use a quality based management system to provide continuous improvement in our system. We have several teams that function to bring about improvement. The board team, the central office administrator team, the principal team, and the curriculum committee. We are constantly considering improvement opportunities. We also have process improvement teams that are organized to deal with specific needs, issues or improvement opportunities. Process improvement teams are in place to develop a reading plan for the system, study attendance, and review bus discipline issues. Our goal is to be one of the fastest improving systems in the state.

We have modern facilities for our students as we have recently completed two building programs. We have added a new expansion at the high school that included six (6) new science labs. We have remodeled the abandoned science laboratories to be used as additional classrooms. Currently, we are in the process of building a masonry shop and classroom, a structure to house a modular homebuilding program, and a new hydroponic greenhouse. We have recently started an Early College High School that will allow students to earn an associates degree while in high school. The school system is nearing the completion of renovating existing heating and air and implementing energy savings strategies district wide. The school system has also constructed three (3) wind turbines to offset electrical costs.

We view our system as a learning institution. We have lowered the pupil-teacher ratios and emphasized academic improvement. We have done well with the North Carolina ABCs program in that all of our schools score well on the end of grade tests. We provide ample opportunity for teachers to obtain professional development. We have added additional vocational programs and endorsed a dual enrollment program with ABTech that allows many of our high school students to earn as much as 21 college credits while in high school.

We are thankful to Paul Barilovits our technology director and his staff for their work on this site. We invite you to come visit us.

Respectfully,

Ronald Wilcox Ed. D
