Marshall, NC 28753

The school at Marshall in 1895 was located on the hill above the Madison County Courthouse. Known as the Marshall Academy it burned in 1918 and was rebuilt as a block structure at the same location. This school was replaced in 1926 by a new structure that was built on the Blennerhassett Island. The island, now known as the Blannahassett Island, is located in the French Broad River at Marshall. The school was featured in Robert Ripley's "Believe it or Not!" newspaper column as the only school located on a uninhabited island in the United States.

The island school was operated as Marshall High School until Madison High School consolidated all of the high schools of the county in 1974. This left the school on the island as a K-8. It remained so until Marshall Primary was built in 1982 as a K-2 school. The school now operates as a 4-5 school known as Marshall Elementary School.

Marshall Elementary School had an enrollment of 108 students as of January 2002. The principal for the 2001-2002 school year is Mr. Vernon Ponder.
