The story of Hot Springs can best be told by the following narrative taken from Hot Springs of North Carolina written by Della Hazel Moore.

"Even during the time that Dorland Bell was in operation, there was another school formed, which was located on Hill Street. The building was a large four-room house and could care for children from grade one through grade nine. Some of the first teachers at this Hot Springs School were Mrs. Maude Gentry Long, Mrs. Ester Craine Brooks, Reverend Pipes, and Orla Plemmons Joyner. This school began about 1914. . . .

In 1925, the rural schools of the surrounding communities were consolidated with this small four-room school in Hot Springs. A bid was made on building a large school with four years of high school work. This bid was made on April 13, 1925. A second bid was made on May 4, 1925, by A.B. Moore for $27,990. The new school opened in the fall of 1926 and was known as Hot Springs High School. Students were brought to the high school by bus from Paint Rock, Antioch, Upper and Lower Shutin, Blood River, and the surrounding areas near Hot Springs. The first graduating class of this school was in 1927. In 1946 the twelfth grade was added to the curriculum, extending a student's work to twelve years before graduation. In 1973, a kindergarten was opened for the five-year-old children, adding another year to one's stay in school. After many years of hard work, Madison High School became a reality. This new consolidated high school was opened in the fall of 1974. This left Hot Spring and the other high schools with grades K through 8. These schools became primary and elementary schools, and all are property of Madison County. The original Hot Springs High School building, erected in 1925-26 was demolished in 1991. A beautiful new building now stands near the former site. Spring Creek students also enjoy the beauty and comforts of this new building."(Moore, pp.121-125).

The present school is a K-5 with a June 2002 enrollment of 120. Mr. Jack Brown is the principal for the 2002-2003 school year.
